Introduction Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and asthma are the two major categories of chronic airway diseases (CADs) that mainly manifests as airflow limitation (AL) with high prevalence worldwide and an increasing trend year by year. 1 2 According to surveys, in Japan, the prevalence of COPD and asthma with AL among patients aged more than 40 years are about 8.9% and 2.0%, respectively. 3 4 And another epidemiological investigation by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare reported that more than 5 million and 9 million Japanese were estimated to have COPD and asthma, respectively.
