HSPA4, a heat-shock protein found to be also expressed in embryonic stem cells [ 97 , 98 ], has been shown to have a critical role in spermatogenesis, as its lack of expression led to reduced numbers of spermatozoa that bore apoptotic characteristics [ 99 ], suggesting again that the expression of this marker in SBSCs may be significant for their survival.
