In the subpolar North Atlantic (Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 983, 60.4°N), during L5-1 the benthic foraminiferal δ 18 O values continued an increasing trend and finally crossed the 4.2‰ threshold, indicating large-amplitude growth of ice sheets 16 which was further supported by the occurrence of ice-rafted debris (IRD) at ODP Site 980 17 (Fig. 4 e,f).
