17 , 19 The distinction between aortic and peripheral artery pressures may be significant due to the phenomenon of SP amplification 18 , 32 : due to the difference in elasticity between aortic and brachial arteries, the SP measured at the brachial artery is amplified from reflected waves and can thus introduce errors when applying centrally derived formulas to peripheral measurements. 19 Routine measurements of blood pressure are not conducted centrally, therefore it is important to validate and determine the optimal MAP formula at a peripheral artery for comparable results.
