19 – 22 A systematic Cochrane review found that antimicrobial therapy did not affect mortality in mild cases; however, there was a nonsignificant trend toward expedited resolution of illness. 23 In general, if symptoms are significant enough to come to clinical attention, and the diagnosis is suspected, the patient should receive antimicrobial treatment.
