Discussion The main findings of this study using a nationwide surveillance database in Japan were as follows: (1) for the incidences of total SSIs and deep or organ/space SSIs, the analysis model adjusted for seasonality was more appropriate than the unadjusted model, with seasonality peaking in summer; (2) in Japan, the incidences of total SSIs and SSIs due to MRSA showed a decreasing trend regardless of the COVID-19 pandemic; and (3) interrupted time series analysis revealed that the COVID-19 pandemic had no demonstrable immediate impact on the monthly incidences of total SSIs, deep or organ/space SSIs, or SSIs due to MRSA following orthopaedic surgery.
