21 The incidence of animal Q fever based on data from the Korean Animal Health Integrated System, also recently displayed an increasing trend from 14 cases in 2015 to 170 cases in 2021. 22 In studies of the seroprevalence of C. burnetii using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, the seroprevalence was 7.1–24.2% in dairy cattle and 8.6–19.1% in goats. 23 24 25 26 Human Q fever is likely to be an underdiagnosed disease because of its non-specific symptoms and diagnostic difficulty that requires tests on paired serum samples collected 4–6 weeks apart. 27 Hence, the recent increase in patients with Q fever may be attributed to increased awareness among clinicians and increased number of requests for diagnostic testing.
