In Taiwan, the average annual incidence and prevalence showed a decreasing trend from 2012 to 2018, the use of International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes rather than rigorous research criteria to identify IBS diagnoses may have led to upcoding or misdiagnosis, which could have affected the reported incidence and prevalence of IBS ( Lai et al., 2021 ).
