Between 2012 and 2022, a total of 1170 publications were identified, revealing an increasing trend in this emergent area of research, propelled by significant initiatives such as the second phase of the Integrated Human Microbiome Project [ 28 ], and rising global concern for dementia as highlighted in the Alzheimer’s Disease International’s Global Dementia Report of 2022 [ 29 ].
