Although the prevalence of ST8 MRSA with SCC mec -IVa (USA300 clone) in Japan has appeared to remain at a low level (e.g., 1.4% in clinical isolates from outpatients [13] ), an increasing trend has been described recently in epidemiological studies [ 8 , 14 ], reaching 5% among blood isolates in a study in Hokkaido [15] .
