Averbeck and Rodriguez-Lafrasse [ 5 ] postulate that although mtDNA only comprises 0.25% of total DNA compared to nDNA, the mitochondrial effects from IR can be fairly significant as mtDNA is more vulnerable than nDNA due to its less efficient repair mechanisms and relative lack of protection against oxidative damage.
