The results of the UKPDS trial, which enrolled more than 3000 diabetic patients without cardiovascular disease at baseline and followed-up for 10 years, demonstrated the importance of tight glycemic control (defined as fasting blood glucose < 100 mg/dl) in reducing the incidence of microvascular complications, and with a trend toward a slightly non-significant 16% relative risk reduction in myocardial infarction.
