13 There has been an increasing trend toward laboratory resistance to methicillin in S. epidermidis (MRSE). 14 This resistance is conferred by an altered penicillin-binding protein (PBP2a) with reduced affinity for β-lactam antibiotics. 15 PBP2a is encoded by the mecA gene carried by a genetic mobile element referred to as the staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCC mec ). 16 Third, the above phenotypic and genotypic characterization of S. epidermidis has a high degree of diversity, which could affect the establishment of the isolates as a pathogen.
