Thiele and coauthors studied the diversity of prokaryotes in the Barents Sea in different seasons and showed that in winter the water is dominated by representatives of the SAR11 clade and the community of nitrifiers, namely ‘ Candidatus Nitrosopumilis’ (Archaea) and LS-NOB ( Nitrospinia ), indicating a possibly significant role of chemolithotrophic metabolism in the community.
