Their results indicated that fecal SCFA levels were highly significant and could be valid and reliable biomarkers for IBS diagnosis, but no significant differences were observed in BCFAs between the two groups; isovaleric acid on its own did not appear to be a robust diagnostic tool [ 48 ].
