Combat ocular trauma in counterinsurgency operations.

This rose to 4.8% in the 1971 India–Pakistan War.[ 2 , 14 ] In Sri Lanka, during the Indian Peace Keeping Force (IPKF) operations in 1987–1989, this increased to 10.5% of all casualties.[ 4 ] In the ground phase of the Gulf War, the number of combat-related ocular injuries in a major combat support hospital accounted for 13% of the patient volume.[ 15 ] Among the British Armed Forces deployed in Afghanistan or Iraq (2004–2008), 10% of cases of significant trauma suffered eye injuries.[ 9 ] Thus, literature shows an increasing trend of ocular injuries, which can be attributed to the increased close-quarter combat, decreased use of aerial warfare, artillery, and armored tactics.
