Before the COVID-19 pandemic, we reported an increasing trend in outbound student mobility among Japanese medical students participating in short-term exchange programs, taking the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), engaging in clinical training, and undertaking research abroad between 2016 and 2019 [ 9 , 20 ].
