When comparing, for each gene, the set of samples showing the highest expression levels (i.e., the 103 samples of the first quartile: “high-25”) and the set of samples showing intermediate/low expression levels (i.e., the 309 samples of the three other quartiles: “others”), the difference between the two groups proved to be highly significant ( Figure 2 c).
