Low circulatory levels of total cholesterol, HDL-C and LDL-C are associated with death of patients with sepsis and critical illness: systematic review, meta-analysis, and perspective of observational studies.

HDL-C Patients that died had a highly significant lower serum HDL-C on day 1 of ICU admission (p < 0.0001, meta-analysis t-distribution) with a pooled mean difference of −7.06 mg/dL (95% CI −9.21 to −4.91 mg/dL) across 17 studies with 1542 participants 17 , 20 , 22 , 31 , 32 , 34 , 36 , 37 , 40 , 41 , 43 , 45 , 46 , 47 , 48 , 50 , 51 ( Fig. 3 ).
