Remarkably, strong evidence from a longitudinal study further indicated an increasing trend in hippocampal volume and neurotrophic factor levels in patients on long-term lithium treatment (Inal-Emiroglu et al. 2015 ) since lithium can attenuate central nervous system damage and ameliorate affective symptoms through neurotrophic factor-mediated neuroprotection.
