The negative buffering effect of diversity on variability across the gradient was similar in microorganisms and macroorganisms (similar slopes, ANCOVA interaction: P = 0.71), and a single linear fit across both microorganisms and macroorganisms was highly significant (CV = 156–71.1 logS, R 2 = 0.58, P < 0.001; Supplementary Information: Fig.
