Mean directional and absolute effects of neighbourhood diversity on plant traits Leaf toughness was the only leaf trait that displayed a significant directional change with plant diversity; focal plant leaves were on average tougher in monocultures than in species mixtures, whereas SLA and leaf nitrogen both showed a marginally significant positive response to neighbourhood diversity (Table 1 , Figure 1a ).
