4.4 Use of eDNA‐based fish monitoring to evaluate ecological status Considering the different monitoring targets, the use of eDNA‐based fish monitoring could be summarized into four goals: (1) conducting routine investigations on the distribution and composition of fish assemblages; (2) tracing alien, protected, and endangered species that are of great indicative significance; (3) evaluating the ecological health of river systems through fish diversity; and (4) reflecting environmental changes (e.g., water pollution and habitat degradation) that may influence fish community structure.
