In the following section, we will describe our approach and experience in conducting NIH-funded laboratory, hospital-, and community-based research that spanned >20 years to culminate in a large randomized clinical trial ( n = 4556) of synbiotics in India which showed a highly significant reduction of sepsis and death (NNT = 27) in the treatment arm.
