The model parameters are constrained in a nonlinear manner by the behavioral data, and importantly, differences in raw choices and RTs may be nonsignificant between groups, while at the same time differences in model parameters may be significant—one of the primary goals in fitting the model is to increase the statistical power for making inferences about specific dimensions of decision-making (captured by the parameters), which are conflated when looking at raw behavioral data.
