We found a weak trend whereby ‘evolutionary distinctiveness’—a measure of species’ relative contribution to phylogenetic diversity 37 —was lower in species lacking meaningful habitat protection or any other documented conservation interventions, compared with species with at least one documented intervention (Extended Data Fig. 9 ; deviance = 4, d.f. = 1, P = 0.05).
