0 people still died of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-related illness across the globe in 2020.[ 1 ] In Singapore, the number of new cases of HIV infection reported each year remained fairly constant between 2008 and 2017 and ranged from 400 to 500 new cases annually.[ 3 ] There has been a decreasing trend in the number of new cases since 2018, with 261 new cases being reported among Singapore residents in 2020.[ 3 , 4 , 5 ] This decrease is likely to be due to multiple factors, including ongoing campaigns focusing on conventional behavioural prevention strategies such as condom use, as well as biomedical strategies such as widespread use of highly effective combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) for HIV-infected individuals to prevent transmission.
