The average coefficient of friction values after running-in, from 20 m to 100 m, showed a decreasing trend, as follows: μ = 0.455 for quenched and tempered DIN 16MnCr5 steel, μ = 0.413 for gas-nitriding, μ = 0.376 for pack boriding, and the lowest value of friction, μ = 0.365, for duplex gas-nitriding and pack boriding when compared to quenched and tempered DIN 16MnCr5 steel.
