The SIRS parameters that demonstrated the strongest independent predictive values for infection were WBC count and temperature at time of admission; while these parameters did not achieve significance in the study, it is possible that they were closest in predicting infection because they were least effected by the “hyperdynamic circulatory syndrome” phenotype that affects the other parameters defining SIRS.
