The reported incidence of post-keratoplasty infection is variable, ranging from 0.1 to 2.47% in various studies.[ 1 , 3 ] In an earlier study, it was noted that the overall risk of post-keratoplasty endophthalmitis was 0.23%, 0.34% for EK, and 0.15% for PK.[ 5 ] The study revealed that the majority (87.5%) of the cases were due to gram-negative bacilli, of which 50% were due to Pseudomonas (P.) aeruginosa , with multidrug resistance and susceptibility only to colistin.[ 5 , 6 ] In contrast to the findings of the study, the Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA) reported an increasing trend in fungal infections following EK than PK.[ 7 ] Candida spp. were predominantly responsible for fungal endophthalmitis and few cases due to filamentous fungi such as Aspergillus flavus .[ 7 ] Therefore, there have been a growing interest and emphasis on incorporating additional antibiotic supplementation into the corneal preservation media.
