Of the nine provinces, only Gansu and Qinghai show a decreasing trend in CE from 2004 to 2021, with decreases of 24% and 0.6%, respectively; this is mainly due to a decrease in CE from water-use systems (28% and 29% in Gansu and Qinghai, respectively) caused by a reduction in the amount of industrial water use (59% and 52% in Gansu and Qinghai, respectively).
