While brackish-water environments like tropical estuaries and coastal lagoons can exhibit a decreasing trend in species richness of macrobiota with an increase in salinity ( 42 , 43 ), changes in microbial richness can deviate from this pattern in response to drivers such as niche availability, community mixture from freshwater and seawater with autochthonous brackish communities, and/or ecosystem disturbances ( 13 , 44 ).
