The effect of the changing climate on the global water cycle has driven a wide variety in the frequency, intensity, and spatial extent of heavy rainfall, leading to an increasing trend of extreme precipitation events. 1 , 2 According to the sixth report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, extreme precipitation events increased to 1·3 times in the majority of land regions compared with the 1850–1900 average.
