Evidence suggests MV-induced lung injury increases the risk of BPD, 28 and thus, there has been an increasing trend of using non-invasive ventilation modalities (eg, CPAP) than endotracheal ventilation during the past two decades. 29 Nevertheless, previous data show that despite the use of less invasive ventilation after birth, the respiratory outcomes of preterm infants did not significantly improve 29 and the prevalence of BPD has been increasing. 18 This suggests that the benefits of solely decreasing invasive ventilation support and transitioning to non-invasive modalities may be less significant than controlling other BPD risk factors.
