Year-to-year yield variability can destabilize crop production and pose a serious challenge to food security 13 , even when it is superimposed on an increasing trend in the yield of the main cereal crops that is driven by improvements in crop production technology and management 14 , as well as by efforts to breed better climate-adapted plant species and varieties 16 .
