However, our results showed that the community composition-based potential for degradation of plant-derived cellulose and hemicellulose, fungal-derived chitin and glucan, and bacterial-derived peptidoglycan showed a decreasing trend with successional time ( Fig. 2 ), while the degradation potential of plant-derived lignin increased significantly with successional time ( Figs 2 and 3 ).
