The standard daily dose (1,998 mg) of acamprosate is known to cross the blood-brain barrier and alter brain physiology; patients with alcohol dependence who were treated with acamprosate showed highly significant suppression of glutamate levels in the anterior cingulate gyrus over 4 weeks. 63 These observations provide a quantitative biomarker of target engagement.
