Longitudinal serological and virological survey of hepatitis E virus in wild boar (<i>Sus scrofa majori</i>, Maremman wild boar) and fallow deer (<i>Dama dama</i>) populations in a protected area of Central Italy.

In wild boar we observed a persistence of the infection and an increasing trend of positivity along the years, with peaks in 2022–2023, while in fallow deer the virus apparently emerged for the first time only in 2022, when the density of wild boar reached a peak (59.2 wild boar/km 2 ).
