The sentences
From panels (a) and (c) it is clear that the anti-ferromagnetic exchange interactions decrease upon inclusion of the Hubbard U while the ferromagnetic interactions do not seem to exhibit an obvious trend.
Although superexchange is expected to be most prominent in insulators both exchange mechanisms always contribute to the magnetic interactions and direct exchange may be significant in some cases.
