A highly significant correlation was found between NIHSS and FIM ( p < 0.0001), confirming that NIHSS scores are a good predictor of stroke disability in terms of FIM and functional gain. 50 One study also found that there was a significant association between NIHSS and upper extremity impairment and stroke severity. 51 This may explain why there was a significant correlation between NIHSS and ARAT scores for assessing arm function in stroke patients in the present study.
