Transient corneal epithelial edema from surgery may explain the epithelium thickening at 1 week.[ 15 ] Laser ablation surgery may impair corneal epithelial sensory nerves and diminish nutritional function, causing corneal epithelium thinning at 1 month postoperatively.[ 16 ] Regeneration of subepithelial corneal nerves typically becomes active around 3 months postoperatively.[ 2 ] Our research found corneal epithelium thickening in the third month postoperatively, suggesting corneal nerve regeneration may be significant in postoperative remodeling.
