However, motor recovery in rats is significantly higher than the one observed in NHPs and humans, since injured rats express a little significant CST axonal regeneration towards caudally to the site of lesion and even so, they are able to bear their body weight just a week after the injury [ 72 ], indicating that the motor cortex is not essential for creating the muscle synergies that sustain simple locomotion in rats and mice.
