Previous studies have shown that a 1-day difference in time to passage of flatus could be considered significant.[ 9 , 10 ] Accordingly, allowing for a standard deviation (SD) of 1 day, a total sample size of 84 was calculated (28 in each group) to detect a difference of at least 1 day in the time to passage of flatus and/or stool.
