This may be significant since, even though the presence of NETs is associated with increased microbial killing due to the microbial entrapment on these structures formed by extracellular DNA and proteolytic enzymes, their excessive production could increase sputum viscosity, thus allowing for increased colonization by microorganisms and progressive respiratory decline [ 42 , 43 ].
