Interestingly, we also observed a concurrent highly significant decrease in the level of beta-alanine ( Supplementary Data Set 1 ), a metabolite long suspected (but so far not proven) to be derivable from aspartate in plants that has previously been observed to increase under heat stress in divergent species ( Parthasarathy et al. 2019 ) and linked to differential tolerance against abiotic stresses, including heat stress, in plants ( Cross et al. 2004 ; Fouad and Altpeter 2009 ; Glaubitz et al. 2017 ; Devnarain et al. 2019 ; Parthasarathy et al. 2019 ).
