In the pioglitazone versus Vitamin E versus Placebo for the Treatment of Non-Diabetic Patients with Nonalcoholic Steatohepatitis (PIVENS) trial, despite the fact that pioglitazone did not have any benefit in the primary outcome over the placebo, it was associated with a highly significant inflammation reduction, hepatocellular ballooning, and reduction in steatosis, and lower IR and liver enzyme levels [ 147 ].
