We observed a highly significant negative correlation between the level of pleiotropy and the magnitude of ancestral variation in gene expression ( Figure 3a and Appendix 1—figure 4b ; rho = −0.34, p-value <2.2e-16 for 1- τ and rho = −0.37, p-value <2.2e-16 for network connectivity).
