Although the overall reservoir streamflow has shown an increasing trend since the 21st century, Tongchang and Gagstai reservoirs in the western Tianshan Mountain Range are experiencing a decrease in wet hydrological extremes and an increase in dry hydrological extremes, while Xiagou reservoir in the eastern Tianshan Mountain Range shows a change characterized by a simultaneous increase in wet and dry hydrological extremes since 1993.
