Our results suggest that even though the two main meteorological drivers of ROS (i.e., precipitation and temperature) have been increasing in the historical period, ROS depicted a bidirectional pattern with an increasing trend in high latitude and altitude regions such as the European Alps, High Mountain Asia (HMA), High-Latitude North America, and Northern Eurasia and decreasing trends in low altitude regions such as some areas of the Western US and Eastern and Western Europe.
