36 The results from observational studies were inconsistent 41 ; however, the pooled estimate from a meta-analysis showed only a borderline significant reduction in hospital admission with metformin (odds ratio 0.73, 95% CI 0.53 to 1.00). 15 Similar to the findings from our systematic review, a meta-analysis of four observational studies with 1646 patients did not find any significant difference in hospital stay (mean difference 1.07, 95% CI −0.55 to 2.69). 12 Metformin's anti-inflammatory capabilities and function in modifying the immune response could explain the reported reduction in long covid.
